Mounting rudeness and disrespect in the classroom are the principal complaints of teachers everywhere. Blatant disregard for teacher’s authority and consideration for other students inhibit the learning process and, fundamentally, undermine the entire educational system. Many educators feel these rude behaviors are a reflection of parent’s lack of support and, without that reinforcement, little can be changed.

So what can you do to make a difference in your classroom? Before school begins meet with parents and talk about your expectations and theirs. Create an alliance and meet periodically to discuss goals and objectives.

  1. On the first day of class, clearly define the meaning of respect and what classroom expectations will be. Designate your classroom a “Respect Zone” and create a “Politeness Policy” chart.
  2. Recognize and acknowledge special “Manner Moments” when you catch children doing the right thing. Have one child a week acknowledged as “Mr. or Ms. Manners of the Week” and let him/her wear a special pin or medal.
  3. Distribute Good Manners stickers, create a Considerate Collections jar for collecting good deeds, and a “Courtesy Chain” with courteous expressions, etc.
  4. Use snack time to set a table, using real place settings, putting napkins in the lap, and teach children not to speak while eating.
  5. Develop a daily lesson plan that includes at least one “mannerly” activity.
  6. Create fun songs and poems that children can recite to remember correct, respectful manners
  7. Use stories and role playing to help children understand the harm caused by using unkind words and hurtful actions.

For older students don’t forget:

  1. Teach children to be Cyber Smart – good manners must be used on line, too!
  2. Transform your lunchroom table into a dining table and have students make place mats, have them properly set the table. A field trip to a local restaurant would be fun to see how well they mastered the skill set.
  3. Educate students how to respect themselves and how to respect the personal space of others.
